Tribute to the People of:
Wootton Bassett
Wiltshire.
SSAFA-Shropshire would like to dedicate this page to the People of Wootton Bassett for the dedication and respect that they show in honouring our returning fallen service men and women who have given their lives in the service of their Country.
This simple but dignified ceremony that has grown in Wootton Bassett is not an organised official ceremony it is a spontaneous, moving, response of respect by the people of Wootton Bassett.
When the tenor bell of, St Bartholomew’s Church begins its sombre toll, silence descends on the town. Shoppers, shop keepers, passers by, residents, and customers of local pubs line the silent High Street and bow their heads in respect; the silence broken only by the dignified weeping and sobs of the grief stricken families and friends as the cortege with the coffins, simply draped in the Union Jack; slowly pass by, taking the fallen to their last resting place.
People of Wootton Bassett
We
Salute you.
