World’s oldest Horticultural show meets the world’s oldest working Military Charity.
The Shrewsbury Flower show can trace its roots back as far as 1836 although the first documented record of the Shrewsbury Horticultural Society was in 1857 however it was not officially founded until 1875 and has now been recognised by the Guinness book of records as the worlds oldest Horticultural Society.
2010 marks 125 years of unbroken, loyal service by SSAFA to Britain’s Armed forces when the charity was founded by Sir James Gildea in 1885. However it is ironic that Sir James started collecting money 5 years earlier in 1880 in support of British soldiers fighting in Afghanistan and their Families left at home.
This year’s event was not blessed with the best of the weather but, the organiser put on their usual magnificent show; and it was a resounding success despite the weather.
SSAFA-Shropshire would like to thank the organisers of the Shrewsbury Flower Show, and the Great British public and, the people of Shropshire for their donations that helped us raise £949.84 pence in aid of our Service men and women and, their families.
We would also like to thank our Sponsors Quantum Web Solutions of Shrewsbury for their help and support and all; the volunteers that made the effort and willingly gave up their own time and manned the; ssafa-shropshire.org SSAFA 125 stand over the two days and, a special mention to David and Ann-Marie Peters for the tremendous amount of work and effort that they put in to organise the whole event for us.
In between the rain showers we did manage to get some photographs, which you can view on the following page.
Once again we would like to thank you all, for your generous support. |
